On January 9, my husband and I went out to our favorite restaurant to celebrate our 13th Anniversary. It was our time away from the routine parenting. A nice dinner, good conversation and some wine tasting. A great evening! As we walked towards our truck I noticed a white envelope under the drivers side of another vehicle. I joked to my husband how I thought it was a bank envelope, and to my surprise it was. My husband retrieved it and began inspecting it for a name, it had a Chase bank logo. He opened it - there sitting in that envelope was $900.00 cash. Wow! My first thought (someone must know that they’re missing this). I said to my husband we have to wait for those people to return to their car. It wasn’t long, but to my inpatient husband it must have felt like an eternity. He says what if they come and it doesn’t belong to them- they’ll lie. He thought it could have been the car next to them. Well that could be true. I stated John Quinones is here, you know the guy from, What Would You Do? He’s here I know it! Our minds going crazy about now, it’s been about 15 mins. Let’s call the police, no, they’ll steal it. Boy, a little cynical, you think? I kept thinking how horrible I would feel if I lost that much money. We have to wait. So we waited, and waited. Close to 30 minutes a couple comes out of the restaurant. They are walking towards the vehicle. We are parked right in front of it. It’s an older couple, and they begin entering their vehicle. They do not appear to have lost anything, we watched as they entered their car without any hesitation. My husband decides to walk up to their car; they’ll probably think we are trying to rob them. We planned to ask them without disclosing the contents of the envelope hoping they could descibe what was in it. My husband stayed a good distance away from the vehicle as to not alarm them. The woman appeared nervous, the older gentleman uneasy. By this time, my husband motioned me over to help with the inquiry. The man says there’s a thousand dollars in that envelope. He says he just took out a deposit. Now this looks like we took $100.00. Then the man says it’s $950.00 and he begins to look through his wallet. Mumbling about spending $100.00. It’s $900.00, he says. Yup, it’s $900.00, says my husband. He gives it to the wife who’s thankful. She tries to hand me $100.00 for returning it, I tell her that’s okay. She says take it, give it to someone who needs it, or to a church. My husband says you can give it to your church. She feels bad, please take it she says. I nicely decline. Saying it wasn’t ours to have. My husband says God Bless ya’ll and we leave. It wasn’t ours to keep! Do the right thing always! (Galatians 6:9-10)
